Veer North 2018 a Success!

Well here we are at the end of a successful fly-in with all sorts of fond memories and new friendships to cherish.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success including the callers (Gary, Barry, Mark and Marge), the Cornwall Swinging Bs who did a fantastic job setting up the potluck, Arts Court, Courtyard Marriott and Tuckers Marketplace, all the volunteers and committee members who worked their collective butts off so that we could have the best dance weekend ever.

We have already been receiving photos and videos from dancers and have started posting them to our YouTube and Flikr accounts so check them out as we continue to update them.

If you took photos or videos that you’d like to share with us, please get in touch.

We’ve left the merchandise section of the Veer North web site up and running in case you’d still like to buy a souvenir of the weekend. We can direct ship to you for a fee so check it out.

Finally, we will be meeting shortly to start planning for our next fly-in which will take place in 2020 for our 25th year anniversary so keep an eye on your email as well as here for an announcement in the coming weeks.

Thank you all so very much for being here with us and thank you for making Veer North to the Capital 2018 an amazing success!

Final Update

Dance Schedule Released:  We have scheduled 18 hours of dancing, over 4 days from 3 callers including levels of Mainstream through C2. Just as a reminder, we added a trail-in dance on Thursday. See schedule on our website for full details.

Arts Court Dance Theatre: Our dance home for 4 wonderful days of dancing is air conditioned and ready to welcome us! We have 2 dance floors that are side by side, and the washrooms are just across the hall, with a break room not too far away. Follow the signs to the theatre and the main hall from any of the entrances. The Arts Court Theatre is just across the street from Rideau Centre, an upscale mall featuring lots of shopping and dining options. Their quick dining options would be ideal for lunch on Saturday, and a short walk away you’ll find many options for supper in the By-ward Market. All meals on Saturday are on your own.

Parking: Street side parking is very limited near our dance venue. However, there are multiple parking garages that are within a short walking distance including the Rideau Centre parking garage ($3 per hour, $20 for 12 hours) across the street. Parking fees are by the hour and vary from garage to garage. We recommend carpooling or taking public transit, OC Transpo. The closest bus stop is Laurier 1A/2A.

Parking is free weeknights and weekends at the World Exchange Plaza and at City Hall but these locations are 10-15 minute walk from the venue.

Registration: The registration/information desk will open starting at 5:30pm on Thursday at the trail-in dance. Stop by to check in and get your registration materials for the weekend. For those arriving on Friday, it will reopen at 5pm and stay open throughout the weekend.

Potluck Supper: A lite potluck supper will be provided on Friday starting at 6pm at Arts Court. If you are in the local area and would like to bring a dish to share, we would really appreciate the help.

Bus Tour:  Sunday morning at 8:45am the yellow school bus will be just outside the Marriott Courtyard our host hotel. Please arrive a little early, we need to leave promptly at 9am for the tour of Ottawa and to enjoy a few dance tips with Gary Monday. We still have a few seats left, you can register on our website for the tour for $15. The bus will drop us off right in front our brunch location.

Brunch: Come hungry at 10:30 Sunday morning! Just across the street from the host hotel, Tucker’s Marketplace is an all you care to eat buffet that includes everything from traditional breakfast items to made to order omelettes and crêpes. Juice, coffee, and pop(soda) are also included. Desserts are delicious, make sure you try their homemade bread pudding!

Merchandise: Help support All Join Hands Canada! Delivery to your home will still be available for a small shipping charge. We will have a few items to purchase over the weekend, however there is limited sizes and colours.

Additional Updates: If there are any new updates before the fly-in, we will post it on our website. We look forward to dancing with you in just over 2 weeks.

See you soon,

Joel Smith, Chair Veer North Committee

Arts Court

img_2154We’ve been hard at work organizing fly-in events and we took an opportunity to take a picture at our dance venue, the Arts Court Theatre downtown Ottawa.

Built in 1870 this building served as Ottawa’s courthouse until 1988 when it became a centre for arts and theatre.

The old city jail is still attached to the building and operates as a hostel so if you’d like to spend a night in a jail cell, this would be your chance. I think body-searches cost extra…

Sorry (not sorry) for the shameless plug for our stunning fly-in T-Shirts. Get yours from our merchandise store at http://www.veernorth.ca

Order before September 1 and choose “Pickup at Fly-In” and you won’t have to pay for shipping.

Update #2

Ottawa Bus Tour:

Don’t miss the bus: You don’t want to miss this bus tour of Ottawa!! The big yellow school bus will pick us up at 8:45 on Sunday morning just outside the Marriott Courtyard for a quick tour around town as we hear some exciting highlights of our great city, and a few tips will be called by Gary Monday. The tour will end right in front of our Brunch location in the Byward Market. The bus tour is only $15.00, and you can register on our websitewww.veernorth.ca

Veer North Merchandise

Look cool and help support gay square dancing: By purchasing something from the Veer North Merchandise store, you will be supporting All Join Hands Canada. All profits from the sale of merchandise from Veer North will be donated to this registered charity.  If orders are placed before August 31, you can choose to pick up the merchandise at Veer North and save shipping. Orders placed after September 1 will be shipped to you for an additional fee.

Trail-In Dance

More Dancing Announced: We have had multiple request for a trail-in dance, or as some have called it a Rust Remover dance. If you are in town early and want a little extra dancing, or you feel that you need some rust removed from the summer break, Barry Clasper will be calling Thursday, September 13 from 6p-9p at the Arts Court Theatre. This will be free to those who have registered for the full weekend!!

Host Hotel

Dance, eat, sleep and dance some more: We have confirmed the host hotel has only 9 rooms available for Friday and Saturday in our room block. The rate will go up once those rooms are filled. We all need our sleep, gives you energy for more dancing!!

Volunteers Needed

Please help: Volunteer with us – we could use a few extra hands at our fly-in. Volunteers are needed during the weekend with registration table, hospitality station, general runners and various other positions available. Contact veernorthtothecapital@gmail.com if you don’t mind donating a bit of your time.

See you soon!
